Northern California TRACON will provide standard IFR separation for VFR aircraft conducting practice approaches at select airports in Northern California and Nevada.

IFR separation for VFR aircraft practicing instrument approaches begins at the point where the approach clearance becomes effective. Separation services terminate at the Missed Approach Point (MAP) unless prior authorization to conduct the published missed approach procedure has been requested and approval has been received from Air Traffic Control (ATC).

VFR aircraft conducting practice approaches do not receive Minimum Safe Altitude Warning (MSAW) processing. A detailed explanation of ATC handling of practice instrument approaches is available in the Aeronautical Information Manual (AIM).

Pilots should be aware that some airports prohibit or restrict practice approaches due to noise abatement programs or traffic congestion. This information is published in the Airport/Facility Directory, Notices to Airmen, and other documents issued by the airport sponsors.
