Subject: PRACTICE INSTRUMENT APPROACHES
Cancellation: 05/21/2028 0000 (UTC)
This letter explains the service provided by Bradley Approach for aircraft practicing instrument approaches in VFR conditions at the specific airports indicated below. Practice instrument approaches are instrument approach procedures conducted by a VFR or IFR aircraft for the purpose of pilot training or proficiency demonstrations. A greater degree of safety is achieved when ATC provides IFR separation to VFR aircraft practicing instrument approaches. Bradley Approach will provide IFR separation, which includes visual separation, 500 feet vertical separation between VFR aircraft and between VFR/IFR aircraft. Application of these procedures or any action taken by Air Traffic Control to avoid traffic conflicts does not relieve the pilots of their responsibilities to see and avoid other traffic while operating in VFR conditions (CFR 91.113). For further information refer to the Aeronautical Information Manual (AIM). Use the following frequencies to communicate with the appropriate Bradley Approach Sector for practice approaches at the following airports:
BDL International: 123.95/290.55 Hartford-Brainard: 123.95/290.55 Westfield-Barnes: 125.35/281.5
Westover ARB: 125.35/281.5 Worcester Regional: 119.0/327.1
Aircraft practicing instrument approaches will be sequenced to avoid disrupting arriving and departing itinerant IFR or VFR aircraft. When practice approaches are authorized, responsibility for separation begins when the approach clearance is issued and ends when the aircraft lands, initiates a go-around, or when the pilot reports terminating the approach. Participating pilots are required by FAR part 91 to report terminating the approach procedure.
VFR aircraft conducting practice instrument approaches are not authorized to fly the published missed approach procedure unless it is specifically requested by the pilot and approved by the controller. Separation on the missed approach will not be provided unless the missed approach has been approved by Bradley Approach.
