New Orleans Tower Letter to Airmen: LTA-MSY-18

Subject: VFR Practice Instrument Approaches

Cancellation: 07/23/2027 1200 (UTC)

New Orleans Approach Control provides radar services for the following airports in the New Orleans Approach Control airspace: Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY), New Orleans Lakefront Airport (NEW), Houma-Terrebonne Airport (HUM), Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base New Orleans (NBG), Hammond Northshore Regional Airport (HDC), Harry P. Williams Memorial Airport (PTN), Thibodaux Municipal Airport (L83), South Lafourche Leonard Miller Jr. Airport (GAO), Bristow US LLC Heliport (2LS0), Port of South Louisiana Executive Regional Airport (APS), Slidell Municipal Airport (ASD), New Orleans Children's Hospital Heliport (LA93).

To the maximum extent possible, New Orleans Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) will provide IFR separation for VFR aircraft conducting practice instrument approaches at the locations listed below, subject to traffic and workload conditions.

Separation services begin at the point where the approach clearance becomes effective and terminates at the missed approach point, unless prior authorization to conduct the published missed approach procedure has been requested and approval has been received from Air Traffic control (ATC). Except for super or heavy aircraft, 500 feet vertical separation may be applied between VFR aircraft and between a VFR and an IFR aircraft.

It should be clearly understood, that even though the controller may be providing separation, pilots on VFR flight plans are required to comply with basic visual flight rules (14 CFR Part 91). Application of ATC procedures does not relieve IFR and VFR pilots of their responsibility to see and avoid other traffic and to maintain terrain and obstruction clearance while operating in VFR conditions.

Controllers will ensure that practice approaches do not disrupt the flow of other arriving or departing traffic; therefore, during busier times it may be necessary to refuse, delay, or withdraw authorization for the practice approach. Pilots should use the term “practice” in ATC communications when making this request.

Pilots requesting practice approaches at the following locations should make their request on the following approach control frequencies:
