Subject: Operational Awareness & Safety Advisory

Cancellation: 04/23/2027 0000 (UTC)

North Las Vegas Airport (KVGT) has experienced multiple instances of incorrect runway alignment, wrong runway landings, and aircraft crossing into parallel final approach paths. Improper runway alignment presents a critical safety risk, which can result in a midair collision. This underscores the importance of precise flight path adherence, particularly during parallel runway operations.

Pilot Responsibilities for Safe Approaches

Maintain Proper Pattern & Descent Profile

  • Fly a rectangular traffic pattern and roll out wings-level on each leg to optimize orientation, enhance traffic scanning, and avoid excessive banking (maximum 30-degree bank angle).
  • Establish a stabilized, reasonable descent rate while maintaining spatial orientation with the runway centerline and follow the vertical guidance provided by the PAPIs.
  • Remain clear of the no transgression zone.

Situational Awareness & Traffic

  • Listen intently and scan for nearby traffic. Be mindful of traffic position since aircraft wings (high wing versus low wing) can obstruct sightlines when turning base to final.
  • If uncertain about the assigned runway, clarify with ATC and confirm the runway numbers match the assigned runway in the landing clearance.

Runway & Lighting Considerations

  • KVGT parallel runways are spaced 700 feet apart (centerline to centerline).
  • Offset thresholds exist at each end, requiring heightened spatial awareness.
  • Runway End Identifier Lights (REIL) for Runway 12L or 30L will be set to intensity level 3 during daytime parallel runway operations.

Additional Considerations:

  • Wind direction & speed (tailwind/crosswind impact)
  • Aircraft performance & handling characteristics (approach speeds/spacing)
  • Minimize distractions & remain focused.
  • Go around rather than attempting to correct an un-stabilized approach or when overshooting final.
  • Use airport diagrams & visual resources.
