Denver TRACON is issuing this LTA on behalf of Centennial (KAPA) and Buckley (KBKF) towers.
Modifying the airspace at KBKF and KAPA to share a border and best serve the flying public while still providing sufficient procedure containment has introduced multiple Class D airspace design challenges at both locations. Meetings between the U.S. Space Force and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), with representatives KAPA, KBKF, and Denver Terminal Radar Approach Control (D01) present, were held on March 9, 2023; August 21, 2023; and October 6, 2023, to address concerns of overlapping circling maneuver areas, as well as to address where a common border should be placed between the two airports. All parties involved in the meetings effectively collaborated towards the goal of minimizing flight hazards and maximizing efficiency while still containing instrument flight rules (IFR) operations within the Class D and E airspace areas.
Using the criteria and standards outlined in FAA Order JO 7400.2P, Procedures for Handling Airspace Matters, OSG determined that Class D and Class E airspace should be modified at these airports. The legal descriptions of the final Class D and E airspaces for BKF and APA can be found in the Federal Register.
The images of the new Class D airspaces and associated BKF Class E2 airspace are overlayed on a sectional below and are a result of this process. The New Class Delta airspaces and associated E2 will be effective 2/20/2025.
