Subject: Adherence to RNAV STAR Tracks and additional Instrument Approach Procedure Clearance Requirements

Cancellation: 05/07/2025 1200 (UTC)

Raleigh/Durham International Airport (RDU), like many modern airports, employs RNAV (Area Navigation) Standard Terminal Arrival Routes (STARs) to ensure efficient and safe traffic flow. These routes are meticulously designed to streamline the arrival process, enhance airspace utilization, and minimize conflicts. However, recent observations have indicated flight crews deviating from the prescribed RNAV STAR tracks at the STAR terminus waypoint.

It is imperative that flight crews strictly adhere to the route descriptions for the assigned landing runway contained on the STAR, noting the specific requirements to remain on a specified track versus heading. Flight crews are cautioned not to inadvertently select heading mode within flight guidance systems at the STAR terminus waypoint and ensure automation and Flight Management Systems are programmed correctly.

Additionally, flight crews are advised of the requirement to explicitly obtain a clearance when connecting a STAR to an Instrument Approach Procedure (IAP), specifically when the STAR’s terminus waypoint coincides with an Initial Approach Fix (IAF) on the IAP. Inadvertently connecting to an IAP will cause aircraft to fly a different track then what is associated with the STAR.

Emphasizing the critical importance of strictly adhering to RNAV STAR tracks when approaching RDU is essential. Deviating from these designated paths can disrupt traffic flow, compromise situational awareness for both pilots and air traffic controllers, and increase the risk of mid-air collisions or near misses. Flight crews are advised to promptly request clarification from air traffic control if there is any doubt regarding clearance.
