Northern California TRACON Letter to Airmen: LTA-NCT-84

Subject: Hayward Airport Departure Expectations

Cancellation: 02/05/2026 1200 (UTC)

BACKGROUND:

The Class D Surface Area at Hayward Airport (HWD) borders Oakland Airport’s (OAK) Class C Airspace and San Francisco Airport’s (SFO) Class B Airspace.

OAK and SFO traffic consist mainly of large/heavy jets conducting a single, instrument or visual approach, and landing to the west. OAK’s North Field is also routinely busy with prop/turboprop and jet traffic.

HWD departures may experience delays during busy OAK or SFO arrival traffic.

HWD JET / TURBOPROP DEPARTURES:

Aircraft should operate at the slowest safe departure speed. The airspace is very congested therefore; excessive speed on departure increases the turn radius and the chances of conflicting with SFO arrival traffic.

Aircraft should turn to the initial departure heading of 170° as quickly as possible.

Aircraft should expect a turn (north or east) over/abeam the San Mateo Bridge (SMB) Toll Plaza to remain clear of the SFO Runway 28 arrivals.

Aircraft may receive multiple altitudes and heading assignments for up to 30 miles after departure. The two most commonly used departure paths are either a northbound or an eastbound path as shown below.
