Subject: Los Angeles (LAX) West Arrivals - Testing "CLEARED APPROACH" Phraseology
Cancellation: 06/10/2023 0700 (UTC)
Southern California TRACON (SCT) will begin testing approved phraseology for IFR arrivals from the east into Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on runways 24 L/R, 25 L/R (west configuration), provided all applicable approaches are fully operational.
Intended to reduce frequency congestion associated with traffic density and ambiguity related to initial approach fix and inbound course commonalities, SCT will steadily increase use of “CLEARED APPROACH” combined with the assigned runway, authorizing a pilot to execute his/her choice of instrument approach.
Note: The ILS, RNAV (RNP) Y/Z, and RNAV (GPS) Y/Z, to runways 24L/R and 25L/R, share the same IAFs and have the same inbound course (CRCUS, SEAVU, and 251°).
EXAMPLE-
“(Aircraft ID), SOCAL approach, CLEARED APPROACH RUNWAY 24R.”
Implementing the condensed terminology within this brief evaluation period, should increase airspace efficiency by curtailing lengthy transmissions and alleviating potential confusion, without compromising safety.
