Subject: Solar Power Plant Glare
Cancellation: 02/04/2023 1600 (UTC)
The Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System at Ivanpah Dry Lake, CA (LAS189036-LAS193034) has the potential to produce sun glare to pilots landing/departing the Las Vegas valley. This plant encompasses approximately 3,500 acres west of Interstate Highway 15 near the California-Nevada State Line containing roughly 175,000 mirrors surrounding each of three collection towers.
Depending on the time of year and time of day, Las Vegas Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) and Los Angeles Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC) receive numerous pilot reports of glare associated with the power plant. Several Standard Instrument Departures (SIDs) and Standard Terminal Arrival Routes (STARs) were revised during the Las Vegas Metroplex project. The following procedures place aircraft in a position where pilots may experience sun glare: LARKK, RNDRZ, RASLR.
To appropriately document these conditions, pilots and other air crew members are urged to utilize NASA’s Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) and provide an Electronic Report Submission (ERS) via the web at http://asrs.arc.nasa.gov/report/electronic.html (http://asrs.arc.nasa.gov/report/electronic.html)
