Subject: WARNING FOR GLIDER ACTIVITY IN THE VICINITY OF TIGER MOUNTAIN
Cancellation: 02/14/2023 1200 (UTC)
Background: The purpose of this Notice is to inform pilots landing/departing from Boeing Field/ King County International Airport (BFI), Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), or Renton Municipal Airport (RNT) of frequent paragliders and hang gliders in the vicinity of Tiger Mountain.
The launch and recovery area used for this purpose is depicted on the Seattle VFR Terminal Area Chart, and is located beneath Class B airspace. Glider pilots are aware of and comply with all FAA regulations regarding airspace use. Glider activity is dependent upon prevailing weather conditions, but no notification is provided to Air Traffic Control (ATC) or to local aviators in the form of NOTAMs when the area is in use, and glider activity is invisible to radar used by ATC.
FAA regulations do not require turbojet aircraft to be contained within Class B airspace when the destination is not the primary airport (SEA). ATC, for the purposes of efficiency and orderly sequencing, may vector BFI, RNT, and on rare occasions SEA traffic, through this area without knowing the status of glider activities within. It is incumbent upon the pilot to maintain extra vigilance when transiting this area during visual meteorological conditions.
