Subject: IFR Separation for VFR Aircraft conducting Practice Instrument Approaches

Cancellation: 06/20/2020 1200 (UTC)

To the maximum extent possible, VFR aircraft conducting practice instrument approaches at the following airports will be provided standard IFR separation by Savannah Approach Control during published operational hours of their respective control towers:

Savannah Hilton Head International Airport (SAV)

Hunter Army Airfield (SVN)

Wright Army Airfield (Fort Stewart / Midcoast Regional Airport (LHW)

Hilton Head Island Airport (HXD)

Controller responsibility for separation begins at the point where the approach clearance becomes effective. Except for super and heavy aircraft, 500 feet vertical separation may be applied between VFR aircraft and between a VFR and an IFR aircraft. Controller responsibility for separation ends at the Missed Approach Point, unless the published missed approach is specifically requested and approved.

Request for practice approaches should be made on the frequencies shown below:

Airport                              Aircraft Position                                          Frequency

SAV, HXD, SVN, LHW     Within 40 NM of SAV, and North of SAV   125.3 / 371.87

Within 40NM of SAV, and South of SAV   120.4 / 353.77

This service does not relieve pilots of the responsibility to see and avoid other traffic operating VFR. It will, however, enhance safety by providing separation from other VFR aircraft making practice instrument approaches, and from those operating  IFR in the terminal area.
